Contender #1 for worst Indian journalist - Arnab Goswami
27 11 2007While the number of Indian news channels are on the rise, the quality of the content arired on them has been hitting rock bottom. But if thats true why are they still popular ? Call it junk news. Just as your potato chips and aerated drinks. Pretty bad for health I say. And leading the line-up of comedians on news channels is none other than our contender # 1 for the worst Indian journalist award - Arnab Goswami.
This guy has to be the worst jounalist out there. That he is also the “channel content head” and Chief Editor of ”Times Now” also makes the channel the worst news channel for me.
What makes Arnab so silly ?
Firstly I hate his “Peter”. (Madras lingo for show-off ?). Secondly he tries very hard to sound intelligent but comes across as rather dumb. His interviewing style looks as though he hss seen tapes of famous news anchors and tries to copy their expressions and emotions without any reference whatsoever to context. Like he gets angry and frowns when he asks a cricketer ” Congrats on making your 1ooth 100″. Or he simply appears dumb when he says stuff like:

I pity this guy really. He is simply no match for a Pranoy Roy or a Karan Thapar. Rajdeep Sardesai, Vir Sanghvi, Vikram Chandra and Sreenivasan Jain can remain happy that this guy makes them look much much better and more intelligent on TV if nothing else .Even Jhujhar Singh has better charisma. Hell Arnab looks less of a man compared to Barkha Dutt 
. Maybe even compared to Udita Goswami. He is more like an overgrown schoolboy trying to be a cowboy.
I was watching this video of his “Frankly Speaking” with “Sitaram Yechury” and I couldn’t stop thinking “Is this guy The One ?”. The one who ? The one with negative IQ!! I can’t find the video online as of now. But when it is available, I shall post the link and you can see for yourself. Or if there is a re-run of the same, you people can sit back and enjoy. All Sitaram Yechury was doing was smiling simply amused that Arnab was misinterpreting everything he was saying. So when Yechury would clarify, Arnab will announce, “Yes, you are very good at debating Mr.Yechury, but aren’t you holding the Government to ranson?” Ransom my ass. Go get a real job and stop pretending to be a reporter!!
He tries to sensationalise everything. The channel takes a new item and sticks to it for hours! Move on, guys!

The mistake regarding the use of wrong news channel name is regretted.I am making changes to that already.
As for him not being as bad as I think, watch him on TV next time and observe how he speaks. I am a little prejudiced alright, but not without a reason!!

If you didn’t understand what I was saying above, Ill make it clear. Journalism is not about talking smart and acting smart. It is about portraying the happenings without adding in your whims and fancies and opinions on the subject. You don’t go about polarising a topic yourself as a journalist. Watch NDTV and you will know. But I must also say, “What’s healthy for us is the thing we most often avoid” So no surprises that you watch TIMES NOW

It’s nice to see you come back and reply. So I’ll be nice to you. It is understandable that you have an opinion about Arnab, and that opinion is that he is a good reporter. I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion. So Ill give you that.
As for commenting after looking at my own abilities and faults, (I take it that that’s what you meant)I am sure I can do a better job than Arnab. But I am again sure that I will not attract audience as much as he will. My style will probably be matter-of-fact and not over sensational.
He is definitely a good show man. He should probably try movies. He does his dialogues well. Reporting though, not for him!!

I am not sure whether I agree with you about Arnab. But I have been reading your replies to comments from Shivani. This girl who ever she is, is obviously not very good at English. And she is in no position to argue with you and your fancy language. So she feels infuriated and is doing her best to reply and is resorting to measures that are not very decent. The trouble with us is we still have a colonial hang over and tend to develop a superiority complex about good English. The decent thing for you to have done is to ignore her comments or to just reply politely if at all you reply. By ridiculing the poor girl you are just exhibiting your own arrogance. I am afraid it is this attitude that make foreigners feel we are a sycophantic lot and do not have any pride in ourselves. I think he is reasonably good if not as good as the mantioned names. I appreciate the way he makes the discussions very engaging. He seems very nationalist, as he takes a lot of interest to discuss matters related to national security and soldier welfare issues.

Now to the actual topic of your blog. I agree Arnab is not as good as Karan Thapar. But as far as Rajdeep Sardesai is concerned he is every bit as bad as Arnab. Worse if you ask me. Rajdeep is always breathless. I know Rajdeep is very popular. But I don’t approve of CNN-IBN’s policy of celebrating every bomb blast in the country. You should have heard Rajdeep when the 2006 Bombay train blasts broke out. He was positively thrilled and kept telling us that some gruesome photographs were going out live and cnn-ibn was the first channel to send it out. At least Arnab whatever his faults does manage to appear sober. And Times Now is not as sensationalist (forrgive me if no such word exists) as CNN-IBN.

Actually Karthik, today I have a lot of free time and am making a lot of entries in your blog. So here goes. Another thing about Rajdeep Sardesai’s channel is that they have a political agenda of their own. Notice one thing about their coverage of any major accident or for that matter a bomb blast. They will always find a Syed Hussain or a Mohammed Ashfaq who has been a casualty and interview his relatives. What I wonder is why they never find any Ram Manohar or Vikram havaldar who is a victim and try to highlight that. You can’t blame times now of giving reports which reek of a definite political agenda. To that extent Arnab is certainly a fair journalist and his channel never resorts to project views but tries to give fair news. Please do not mistake me for a person who belongs to the rabble rousing Modi brigade and a Hindutva fanatic. I definitely am not one. But I do agree with them to the extent that English media by and large is highly biased. And I definitely find Times Now is an exception.
I read the exchange and I don’t see anyone’s language being ridiculed anywhere. Can you point out any instance where this happened?

a)A girl whoever she is , and is not good at English should not be judging an English channel journalist. Would you like to write movie reviews for French movies ? Even if you did, how reliable would that be ? So don’t you think no matter how much you pity a person’s lack of “fancy French” , their opinion on a French movie doesn’t count!!
b) Blatantly using superior English to infuriate someone ? That sounds lame, not even ridiculous. And I don’t want to fight sire. Fighting is not for me.
c) I was more than polite with my replies.

Arnab is getting horrible by day; especially after the Bhajji-Symonds row. yesterday they showed the clip of Ricky Ponting asking umpire Benson to talk to Harbhajan; he showed the video as if it was a sensational new discovery by “Your Channel” (as he quotes about Times now); He also kept raising questions as if asking umpire to intervene was a crime. he had Farooq Abdulla and Harish Salve to beat up BCCI; Ratnakar Shetty (BCCI official) was hardly given chance to respond. I am not a supporter of BCCI, but I think calling somebody just to them up without giving equal opportunity to speak is unfair.
I think it’s high time they give Arnab a break

Why am I dead against Mr.Goswami ? Why I am not even against him. I just don’t like his reporting and as a consumer, I have every right to have an opinion on how good or bad a reporter is. You could have a website yourself , where you glorify Arnab. People in India even build temples.
But to be honest, I have seen Arnab mellowing down just a little at times. And he doesn’t seem so bad then.

To all Arnab fans, this is not a one off post. I meant to follow it up with other contenders as well. There are one or two in the EQ section of HT. I will write on that later. But then Arnab is still #01 on the list. Atleast the others are genuinely dumb.
The folks at TimesNow manage to bring the most happenning people on air with him. But he always ends up coming across as someone highly incapable of any sort of intelligent discussion. The moment I see him on TV I’m gripped by this irrepresible urge to flip the channel ASAP lest I have a terrible headache or end up feeling nauseous. When I heard he was Chief Editor of ”Times Now”, I almost fainted. It surprises me that a media conglomerate like the Times Group can’t find someone better. I suppose he is in that position because he’s a relative of someone in the Times Group or has paid someone there. It obvisously couldn’t be on merit.
Please don’t dishonour people like Karan Thapar, Bharka or even Rajdeep by speaking of them in the same breath as Arnab.
Untimely interruptions, IQ on the wrong side of zero, low comprehension skills …. the list is endless.

I hate him….hate hate hate hate hate….HATE HATE HATE the a-hole. ( i know you said, we shouldn’t but I can’t help it)..I for one was extremely disappointed with Indian news channels after moving here 2 years ago. I’ve grown up watching the CNNs, NBC and other network channels and was sad to see the same nonsensical tactics being used here. I don’t remember news in India always being like this but then again, I only came to visit every now and then during the summers so maybe it was always like this. I do remember that the DD English news was awesome. No frills, straight to the point. But maybe that’s why they’re also losing money.
Arnab is loud, un-intelligent and completely misses the point of journalism. I’d say he’s more of a boor. It seems like he’s out to start a fight with every one who’s on his show. He was that asshole in uni who’d start a debate just to sound intelligent even while making no sense. I think he must have been smoking a bit too much of the green stuff while he was in college because he obv didn’t pay attention in class.

As for the other anchors, I don’t think anyone is top notch since all the channels are biased. I’d say they’r a bit leftist (towards the congress). Of all of them NDTV is defintitely the left most. I was shocked to find out that Brinda Karat is Prannoy Roy’s sister. So Prannoy must have some commie in him.
Rajdeep is a tad better than Arnab but not that great.
Karan thapar is by far one of the most intelligent.
But of all the anchors that I’ve seen, my favourites are Tim Sebastian of the BBC HARDtalk and Peter Mansbridge of the CBC.
Without doubt the best news channels are the BBC and the CBC.
IMHO.

DD News was indeed matter-of-fact. And you are right in saying that that’s why they are losing money.
I used to watch DD newsreaders in awe when I was much younger. But I think the quality can be attributed to the short time slots they were alotted. It made sure that they didn’t cover where SRK likes to pee.

When he used to be with NDTV, i thought he was better than Sardesai. Who says he is a journalist ?? He is fit to be a news reader..Times Now is the worst of the lot..There seems to be no content-control..simply pull-up somebody’s comments and air it all day long …. they seem to just want to air Cunt-row-vussies( as they say ) … All his other crew are also incompetent to the core…
Speaking of Barkha, she ain’t far behind. She tries to sound very intelligent and pro-people covering up her personal views under the veil of ‘ The people of this country ‘ . She brings up some lame issues and starts debating over it for an hour. The other day she was out to pin the BMW case witness by some lame candid camera shots. It was a pleasure watching her getting banged by Soli Sorabjee and Ram Jethmalani who refused to give in to her prodding unintelligible questions.
These people need to go back to the definition of Journalism.

I wanted to find this idiot’s background..your blog was the second entry … good to know some sane ppl exist. I was trying to figure out how we can counter such biased and gonzo journalism? Unless the govt keeps a check on them like in Russia, i don’t see an end to such reporting. Goswami’s brains would be on the road had he been in Russia.
I wish that Arnab reads this blog when he googles his own name..tat would be hilarious unless otherwise he misinterprets the article and comments.

i have been watching arnab debating in times now,on daily basis,since august last year nd i can say that in my opinion he is right up there along with rajdeep and barkha.i wud say he is among best #3 news anchor in india.

I don’t know what you find in these guys…. can’t deny your observation that Rajdeep and Barkha are also in the same league, ‘the league of extraordinary losers’ … making a mockery out of news reporting…the fact is they don’t know what they are reporting, why they are reporting,
god only knows what they are upto…..they are jus fighting for viewership.
They should look upto selfless people like Mr. Sainath ( Rural affair editor of The Hindu ) who is in the field for a noble cause.

I don’t know about the spice you are refering to. But then even if there was, I am not into Journalism and I cater to a niche segment of readers. I don’t have the same responsibilities as a TV showman. (read newsreader) If anything I don’t make money out of this.

The Keep-the-journalists-in-check is a debate that will go on forever. While in certain cases, it’s good that they have the freedom they want, in other cases, it’s just plain annoying.
If ever Arnab reads this blog, I suppose he will either ignore it and try to be all I don’t care what a dimwit says. Or, he will go all out against it and start a SPECIAL debate on blogging and how much freedom can be given to bloggers and how the internet is evil and all sorts of things like that. (Add to that a list of irrelevant stuff.)

There is no harm in expressing your personal opinion, but going by what journalism means, i wonder whether they are right in doing so.
When i say this, i am not referring to the prevalent biased reporting. These guys have taken it a step further. I am referring to these buggers(Sagarika, Rajdeep) blogging (their personal construed ideas) in their OWN news website (cnn-ibn). tat’s really annoying. posting their views independently in a blogsite is entirely different & accepatable. Another annoying thing is tat they screen ur comments (to their posts) and don’t show em if they find it derogatory(or just plainly of opposing nature)

i can give u an instance. one fine day these mofos come up with smth like - ‘ our channel has got hold of startling piece of evidence indicative of the union minister for shipping using his ministerial clout to influence the pmo in securing gas for his son’s chemical company ‘. subsequently there is a hullaballoo in the house with the the rest of the buffoons demanding the minister’s resignation. 2 days later the petroleum minister clarifies tht it was just like any other request letter to the pmo . poof - end of story …show’s over. and they all go - ‘moving on, in other news…’ wht the ? u bring someone down to the floor, crap all over him and simply move on. i am not saying tht the guy is an angel, but this particular portrayal of the minister was completely uncalled for.

The debate made interesting reading. However, I am not sure that Arnab is the worst- he is bad though. The worst in my view would be Barkha Dutt- the lady who is rude, doesnt let the interviewees speak, and tries to push her own agenda or perpectives.
