What ?? About Me

#Edit – 2014-09-29

This page was badly in need of at least a small edit and I finally felt compelled enough to try and make changes. (These days, I give up mid-way through doing a lot of … See what I did there.) The first draft of this page was in 2007 – wow, that’s 7 years back!

I wanted to say something smart and original here. But then chances are, someone has already said it before. (Maybe this included.) So, instead I give you…

About Me

Currently pursuing an Engineering degree with some degree of difficulty. There are people with opinions about me that range form a nice guy to an obnoxious self centered smug snob. (Even Psycho and loosu dawg have been associated with me 😀 ) Honestly, even I don’t know. So keep guessing. You might actually end up enlightening me.

At the time of composing this page, things were mostly copy-pasted from Orkut – yes Orkut – way back when. Naturally that was years ago. In the time since then, I finished my undergraduate degree in Engineering, worked as a Software Engineer for three years – realized it wasn’t necessarily my cup of tea, went back to Graduate school to pursue my Master’s in Electrical Engineering, and now work as a Design Engineer in Semiconductors. While, most of the above  non striked-through italicized line holds true, I think I have generally noticed some changes in myself – for one, I have become less rebellious, less I don’t care what you think – I’ll do what pleases me even if it rubs you the wrong way, less aggressive, less obnoxious, less smug, less snobbish, and generally a much nicer guy. (for the believers) I guess age does that to you. I have also become more obsessed with perfection – so much so that a lot of my posts don’t make it past the draft phase, and never end up getting published. It’s not such a bad thing for people I guess 🙂

Good books, Sports, Electronics, Music, Quizzing, Crossies, Programming, Movies (not the masala stuff)

#Edit – 2014-09-29

Unfortunately, being an undergrad and working are diametrically opposed worlds. My love for participating in Quizzes and solving crosswords has waned – something that saddens me a lot, but I realize I just don’t have the amount of time I used to, and with age, you now have other responsibilities tacked on – so what little time is left is spent doing chores! (Thank God I don’t own a house – otherwise, I’m told most weekends is yard work!) The same can be said of programming as well – it’s been ages since I tried solving an interesting problem using a computer program. I still do program – at work, although, it’s now substantially reduced, because I don’t work as a Software Engineer any longer. That’s something I miss as well – just doing something because it interests you. My book reading and movie watching haven’t gone away entirely, but have definitely waned. My interest in music somehow prevails – and I recently got into the whole “lossless” game – sure, I’m still a beginner, but it’s a nice hobby if you have time.

I do a lot more outdoorsy stuff now including hikes, running and bicycling.  I guess that’s because (a) To try and get back to my undergrad shape! (Blame it on age and slowing metabolism again) and (b) because with age, I now realize that in 10 years from now, I might not be able to do some of these physically intensive things.

I’ve run a couple of half-marathons, although the times haven’t been great to put down on a page. 🙂 I’d like to at least finish in 2:10 and maybe later in 2:00, before I start bragging about it. As for biking, again, not the greatest of bikers out there – I don’t wear cleats, don’ have an expensive bike, (actually I’ll soon have to take that back. I sold my old bike while moving recently, and need to buy a decent one as a replacement.) don’t wear cycling clothes …etc. Also owing to my own inexperience (foremost), and due to the fact that I had a shitty Walmart road bike, (a GMC Denali, that had 32c tires that could only be inflated to 70psi, and a few other warts that made the bike slightly average, but more than enough for someone commuting to school, and using it for weekend long rides) my average speed has been around 15mph – nothing to brag about again. I’d like it to be up near the 20mph range, especially if there are no hills/climbs involved. I haven’t yet done a 50 mile ride, or a 100km or a 100 mile ride – so definitely a beginner there. I’d like for that to change soon. I have managed some 40+ miles in a single ride thus far.  I can consistently do 25 miles any day. I just haven’t pushed myself beyond that regularly. Also, I haven’t ridden with a group, since that means a commitment, and you might get invited to ride out with them and find out you don’t have time. I am seriously considering doing a half-Ironman sometime. I know I can manage the running leg and the cycling leg, with some training. I am absolutely sure I can’t do the 1.2 mile swimming leg. The max I can swim right now is a couple of laps in a 25m pool!! Boy, would I love to complete a half-Ironman.

I have somehow continued playing Table Tennis, Tennis and Badminton through these years, the frequency varies, but it’s something I still enjoy and find time for. (I started playing TT and tennis way back when I was in the 5th grade – and though never really good at it, I manage. I took to badminton much later – somewhere in my second year of work post Bachelor’s and have enjoyed it ever since.)

I guess you go through phases in life where you do something, and then you move to something else – the glory days are sometimes hard to revisit, due to ever changing circumstances. I know I loved my motorcycle touring days, and my photography enthusiast days – but I guess I’m never doing those again in the foreseeable future.

I have added some more niche hobbies to my already existing long list – I collect coins – well, I used to collect coins back in India as well, I just found it interesting when the coin had some more information than the usual coins. I re-kindled the interest after coming to the US, with the state Quarters intriguing me. I started with the American State Quarters, and even bought albums to put my coins into. I have expanded the collection to some more, including Presidential Dollars and National Park Quarters. I definitely don’t have many international coins, and don’t plan on going after them aggressively either.

Also, I am a little in to PEZ 🙂 Yes, I know –  too old to be getting into that, so much so that I have to tell people at the billing counter that it is for my niece. I have a decent collection going – some 100+ figurines, that includes characters from Star Wars, Marvel and DC comics, Star Trek, The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, Mickey Mouse, Toy Story, Cars, Monsters University, Mario, Barbie, Christmas, Easter, Valentine’s, (wonder how I don’t have the Halloween ones.) , Scooby Doo, Rio 2, Planes, TMNT. I am constantly on the lookout for new ones, although I haven’t yet gone ape-shit crazy into collecting everything I possibly can and paying huge amounts of money on it in the process. (I doubt I ever will – I am not a professional collector.) I am also restricting to buying it from the local stores – if you start buying online, there’s a huge collection available and I don’t want to spend a huge chunk of cash on it all of a sudden. (I am kinda mad at myself for having spotted Ahsoka, Anakin and Obi-Wan, and not having picked them up – next time I was in the store, they were gone. Also, while I have Boba Fett, I might have spotted Jango Fett as well, and didn’t pick it up!)

It’s possible that the black text will merge into the black background and not be visible.

I play/used to play Cricket, Hockey, TT, Basketball, Tennis, Shuttle,… And I am not kidding either. However recently I discovered that one (of the many) thing(s) I really suck at is Chess. My 2 year old neighbor defeats me at it. 😦

#Edit – 2014-09-29

Cricket – well haven’t played seriously after undergrad – ever. Hockey – not played at all after my 10th grade. Same with Basketball – once a promising player 🙂 (Hey, I captained my school’s sub-junior team if you will believe me.), I have never had time to take it up again. The racket sports, somehow I have managed to continue playing.

I love sleeping. I could probably also add quizzing, programming and reading to it.

Darn it! Quizzing, Programming and reading – I wish!

A matter of honor, Kane and Abel, First Among Equals, and most other Archer Novels.Sheldon, Dan Brown and Ludlum novels are staple diet.

The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. (If you haven’t read it already, I suggest you do.)

I am against the entire HP fanboyism, but read the books nevertheless. [:P]

An avid Hardy Boys fan.

I should just add a link to my Goodreads page here – too much duplicate effort otherwise.

At this point, I don’t have the patience to edit any more of this page – for another day then.
