Big Time Spamming on Orkut!!

Weird, after the exams have ended, the number of posts in my blog have gone down. I have lost the drive somehow. So I am thankful to the ORKUT spam. It has made me revive my interest in blogging…. 😉

Here’s the text that’s doing the rounds on ORKUT currently. (As always there are customised versions, but this is pretty much the base of all crap..oops, scraps)

Orkut

HEY ITS DIANNA, FROM THE DIRECTOR OF ORKUT,EVERYBODY SORRY FOR THEINTERRUPTION BUT ORKUT IS CLOSING THE SYSTEM DOWN BECAUSE TOO MANY BOTTERS ARE TAKING UP ALL THE NAMES, WE ONLY HAVE 57 NAMES LEFT,
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO CLOSE YOUR ACCOUNT, DONT SEND THIS MESSAGE, IF YOU WANT
TOKEEP YOUR ACCOUNT ,SEND THIS MESSAGE TO EVERYONE ON YOUR LIST.
THIS IS NOT A JOKE, YOU’LL BE SORRY IF YOU DONT SEND IT. THANKS DIRECTOR OFORKUT, TIM BUISKI. WHOEVER DOESNT SEND THIS MESSAGE, YOUR ACCOUNT WILLBEDEACTIVATED AND IT WILL COST YOU $ 10.00 A MONTH TO USE IT

  • Lesson number 1: If you ever recieve a mail or a message that’s entirely in capitals or uppercase, it means that its spam. (Or that the person is really pissed with you . Did you break up with your Girlfriend over phone 😉 )

  • Lesson number 2:No one says Hi its Diana, From the Director of Orkut!! (Idhu enna filim dirctor aa ? )

  • Lesson number 3: “Sorry for the interruption.” What interruption ? Somebody read some old mails and made this up.

  • Lesson number 4:I don’t know how they arrived at the figure 57. I say 69 would have been a better number. What say ? 😉 But how does Diana know that only 57 “Names” are left. (Diana, you sure must have skipped permutation and combination classes.) Even if Google Bots were to work overtime, I really doubt they can leave just 57 names. I’d say there’s better chances that Indians reproducing will take up more names. 😀 Seriously!! If only they had unique names.

  • Lesson number 5: “You’ll be sorry if you don’t send this message.” Dude no one says You’ll be sorry to subscribers, seriously!! Maybe in China they do!! Not in other places.

  • Lesson number Im_Losing_Count: “Tim Buiski“-> So Diana is also Tim Buiski. That means he…wait she ? is either a transvestite or a eunuch or a cross-dressing eunuch!! And what does that make you ? Taking messages from transvestite eunuchs seriously ?

  • Lesson number Im_Losing_Count+1: No one types more after saying thanks!! Not even as an afterthought.

Implications:

  • What spam is meant to do is exactly what this message warns you against. Overload servers and cause interruption of service. If nothing else, it takes up space in servers which couls otherwise have been occupied by meaningful scraps. (Yea, no one uses scraps meaningfully, but maybe a few more whaddups…)

  • Imagine if you were to send this to ever friend and they in turn sent it to every other friend (even enemies) on orkut, how many spam messages are being created. I was going to show a mathematical calculation, but no one like math, so we will skip it.

  • To the same effect are scraps which say that your love will come true if you message this to 100 people. Bozos!! Instead send one well written message to that one person!! Wait lemme see if I can find one on Orkut…..OK I cannot go around looking at random peoples scrap books. So I’ll skip that too.

  • The “message all your friends” is a nice utility at times, but is another potential spam causer!! (You are urging decent people like me who say what’s up to one person to say that to a whole bunch of people)

PS:  Im_Losing_Count can be considered  a constant 😉

Moral of the story, don’t propagate spam!!

  1. Vyaas,

Diana was probably not Diana at all. And knowing spammers the probability that the spammer was a girl is pretty low. (Yea in movies they show you a hot female hacker and stuff….but i believe they are few in number.)

So watch it before you say hot. 😀

But I agree with you on the “no brains” part. Whoever sent that spam scrap……and people madly forwarding it

  2. Hi Karthink, I just saw this messege in my inbox at Hi5, and it’s funy, it’s the same messege that you were talking about here, but translated to spanish.
I’m in doubt, who the hell sent this messege and who the hell waste his time translating it. The sapammer also added a new sentence, is should be somethink like, “copy and paste this message on a new one. Don´t use the ‘reply all’ or ‘re-send’ feature”. Well, sorry about the clumsy of this lines, but my english skills are to poor. Well here it goes:

  3. @Daniel,

Yea, after Orkut has introduced mass scrapping, lot of spam doing the rounds. It’s not a waste of time. If everyone sent each other this message, then the servers would be flooded. However, it is not constructive use of time either.

Of late, Orkut has been identifying spam comments on it’s own and deleting them too. That’s what I heard.
