Rahul Dravid in the Gillette Advertisement
I was recently browsing TV channels (It’s becoming something of a hobby now) when I saw Rahul Dravid in the Gillette advertisement. While it is not at all surprising that cricketers come in advertisements (actually they tend to consider their cricketing career as side jobs focussing more on advertisements.), what was surprising were the other people in the advertisement:
Thierry Henry
Tiger Woods
Roger Federer
Whoa!! While Thiery Henry might not be the Roger Federer of soccer, Roger Federer and Tiger Woods are a class apart when it comes to Tennis and Golf. So I was wondering how Dravid even featurd in the advertisement along with these gentlemen. I mean Dravid is a good cricketer no doubt, but you cannot draw parallels between this chap and federer now can you ? Even if it was Sachin Tendulkar, I’d have my own doubts. But Dravid isn’t even India’s best batsman let alone the world’s.
I searched the internet for pictures of the same and here’s what I found:

Photo sans Dravid. Ah, so that’s the deal. They just showed Rahul Dravid between overs in television when cricket matches were being telecasted. Otherwise, he is absent from the campaign in other countries I guess.
Here is a YouTube videos (again Dravid is missing):
Apparently its called ‘Gillette Champions’ and Dravid is featured in Cricket. Here’s the photo I found in their site.
Also, the ‘Fusion Power’ razor is not yet in India. (It’s got 5 blades!! Whoa)

Cricket… bah.
Who needs 5 blades on a damn razor? It’s nuts! And will be insanely expensive.

Rahul Dravid IS the best batsman in India, and probably in the world. He is one of the true connoisseurs of the game.
Dont insult him. Why do you think I modeled my batting technique on him?

@Marc,
Yes, undoubdtedly, it will be expensive. Mach 3 is currently the standrd in India.
@Sundar,
I think you should have prefixed your comment with a IMHO. Dravid is a good batsman. But in no wat India’s best batsman. Sachin, Sourav and maybe even guys like Yuvraj and Dhoni are doing better than him.
As for you modeling your batting technique on him, isn’t that more insulting ?
But yes, he has an amazing batting technique compared to others and is kinda consistent. (even these days, he is consistent on not making runs
)

Incorrect, Karthik. The two blade razors are the standard. The Mach 3 is damn expensive.
Sundar, no wonder you have issues.

I use a Sensor Excel myself.
Haven’t upgraded to Mach 3 yet. You know it’s not the razor that’s expensive. It’s the bloody blades. Man, they cost a small fortune.

Yeah. Rs. 250 for a pack of 2 cartridges.

Umm Karthik, No offense, but you shave? I thought you and madhu were in the same catergory.
J/k..

@Shiva
I do shave once in a while. I am happy I don’t have a dense stub. I hate shaving really. But mostly use my Philishave. Use the razor once in a while.

“Roger Federer and Tiger Woods are a class apart” – actually no.
“I think you should have prefixed your comment with a IMHO. Dravid is a good batsman. But in no wat India’s best batsman. Sachin, Sourav and maybe even guys like Yuvraj and Dhoni are doing better than him.”
- you should have prefixed your opinions with an IMHO as well.
See wat happens when you nitpick?

Hi Gemz,
A very amusing comment.
Roger Federer is ranked No.1 (for some time now) and wins almost every grand slam. He has either equalled almost all records in tennis or broken them already.
http://www.atptennis.com/1/en/home/
As far as Tiger Woods goes,if you bother to check Wikipedia this is what it has to say,
“Tiger Woods (born Eldrick Tiger Woods,[1] December 30, 1975) is an American professional golfer whose achievements to date rank him among the most successful golfers of all time. Currently the World No. 1, Woods was the highest paid professional athlete in 2006, having earned an estimated $100 million from winnings and endorsements.”\
“He has been named Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year four times, a record he shares with Lance Armstrong.”
As far as Dravid goes, current matches are an indicator. If you believe in “form is temporary, class is permanent”, then his records do not show him to be any better either.
So yes, this is indeed IMHO
And I see what happens when I nitpick. People who don’t have the balls to use their real name on a comment, come and type out dumb comments like this to which I have to respond. What a waste of my time. (With a name like Gemz, I am left guessing your gender.)

btw, what was your final conclusion to: “Roger Federer and Tiger Woods are a class apart” – actually no. ?
-you just listed a few things.
For the 2nd part, if it is indeed an imho then was I right?
“And I see what happens when I nitpick. People who don’t have the balls to use their real name on a comment, come and type out dumb comments like this to which I have to respond. hah that part where you said “I am left guessing your gender” , is probably the lamest comeback I have ever heard and believe me, I’ve heard a lot of comebacks.

@Gemz,
The IMHO is applicable to both ‘parts’. That doesn’t take away the fact that it’s universally accepted.
With a low-life character like yours, I believe you about your comebacks. Just don’t come back here.

I do not know a thing about the game of cricket, however, I can say that 5 blades is better then 3 – having used both. Before buying I thought that 5 was just overkill, but it really is better.
As for the Gillette ad, it is thought by some that it brings bad luck. After all, Tiger subsequently blew out his knee and can’t play until next year, Henry developed a severe case of sciatica (the two nerves that run down the back of your legs) and Federer’s game is rapidly falling off. Can problems for Dravid be ahead? Dravid, grow a beard quickly!

Karthik, it would be interesting to know on what basis you think Dravid is not in the same class as an Henri, for instance. Henri is overrated, Dravid has the record to justify his presence there. Sure, Federer and Woods are in a different league, but if Henri is there, Dravid has more than enough reason to be in there.
As for Dravid’s standing in world cricket, I would suggest that you look at his overall record before declaring him not good enough. His record, and the huge role he played in India’s successes – for which he (probably) holds a record as the most successful batsman under a single captain in wins – speaks volumes about his value to the team.
Nothing typifies this better than the rush of Channel 9 commentators lining up to declare Ponting “the best batsman in the world” when he overtook Dravid’s test average. Till then, of course, they had no such thoughts to offer.

1) Federer – class
2) Tiger Woods – class
3) Henry – class, yes 03/04/05/06/07 there cant be many who equal the grace and class of Thierry Henry. Both as a man and as a professional. If you don’t watch footbal, don’t make such an accusation. If you wish to go by stats alone, Thierry Henry is the most prolific striker the premiere league has ever seen. He has won the world cup. Above all, he is a true gentleman. What more do you want?
4) Dravid – class. Its also about being the right “look” for this advert. Ricky Ponting had his time, so did Matthew Hayden, but would you call those jerks real ambassadors of a game? Its not just about performance. Its also about grace, and a quality that Gillete would wish to emphasize. Federer – cool, quiet, does his job, hasn’t had any controversies, temper issues. Same with Tiger Woods. Same with Thierry Henry. See this men conduct themselves on the pitch. And same with Dravid.
